German Citizenship Test Questions – Part One (50 Questions)
The German citizenship test (Einbürgerungstest) is less difficult than it is unfamiliar: questions about a political system, a constitution and a set of rights, worded in a way that can confuse anyone reading them in German for the first time.
In this part we go through fifty questions from among the most frequent, explaining what a question is actually asking before explaining its answer.
What the video explains
- Questions on the political system in Germany
- General knowledge about the federal state and its institutions
- The principles of the German constitution (Grundgesetz)
- The rights and duties of residents and citizens
- How questions are worded, and how to read what is meant before choosing
How to prepare properly
Memorising alone is not enough, because a question can be worded in more than one way. The more useful approach is to understand the idea behind the question, then practise the official wording at the BAMF online test centre — the source from which the real questions are drawn.
How to study these questions
Spread the questions over several days rather than one long sitting, and start each day by going back over yesterday's before you add anything new. Answer from memory before you look at the options — if you know it without them, you have understood it rather than memorised it. Keep a short list of the ones you get wrong, and go through that list on its own two days before the appointment.
The official form and the responsible office
The only official reference is BAMF, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. Its practice centre is free and gives you questions in the official wording — use it rather than unofficial apps:
Frequently asked questions
How many questions are in the real test?
The number of questions and the pass conditions are set by the official body and can change. Rely on the BAMF page above rather than on hearsay.
Are the questions the same in every federal state?
The general questions are federal, and questions specific to the state you live in are added to them.
Where is part two?
On its own page, which continues directly from this one.
Please note: This is preparation and practice. The official questions and pass conditions come from the responsible naturalisation authority.
