Fifty sentences for building your German vocabulary – part seven

Fifty sentences for building your German vocabulary – part seven

Part seven, and its table sits at the most useful and most awkward place of all: speaking inside a public office. The clerk speaks fast, the sheet in front of you is in a language you do not have, and the time is counted. These twenty phrases carry you through with dignity.

They are ordered as the visit itself runs: arriving, understanding the form, signing, and leaving with either an appointment or a paper in hand.

Why a store of words is built by volume, not by rule

Grammar organises what you already know; it does not produce what you do not. Someone who still cannot speak in the street after a year of study is usually short of words, not of rules. That is why this series comes in batches: fifty words at a time, heard, repeated and used, rather than analysed and explained. Anyone measuring their own progress knows that the distance between one level and the next is counted in words before it is counted in anything else.

How to fix a word so it does not slip away

  • Listen to the part once through, then again while pronouncing along with it, not after it
  • Split the fifty over five days, ten a day — a single large batch is forgotten whole
  • Review yesterday's words before starting today's; two minutes are enough
  • Write one sentence per word taken from your own life, not from a book
  • Review the whole part after a week and again after a month — spacing is what moves a word into long-term memory
  • Anything forgotten twice goes on a small separate list and is reviewed on its own

Frequently asked questions

The most important phrase in this table?
Können Sie mir eine Bestätigung geben? — a confirmation is what protects you when, months later, you are told the paper never arrived.

Am I entitled to an interpreter?
Asking is always legitimate; whether it is granted, and who bears the cost, differs by office and by procedure. Ask the office itself rather than assuming.

What if I do not understand the decision I received?
Do not wait. Ask what it means, and note the deadline written in it — that is what fixes how long you have to object.

Should I go alone or take someone?
If you have someone with good German, take them to the large matters. Go alone to the small ones on purpose — that is the fastest language practice there is.
